And when they were kids they would always try to spend time with each other even though Zabuza didn’t like Suigetsu to be with Haku and Mangetsu disapproved of their friendship?

His body tensed at the initial contact, He’d not allowed anyone to touch him in any way since he’d woken up outside that little town several months back. Even accidental brushes with passersby made his skin crawl and prickle. But this was entirely different, it felt natural, perfect, and so very very warm.

It felt as though every inch that the boy pressed against him radiated a warmth that crept and wounds its way up into his chest.

A hand lifted, those rough, ever steady hands of a master of the sword.

Why were they shaking that way?

Why did his eyes feel damp?

He could have pulled Haku away, put a stop to strangeness of it all just like that. But his body worked its own will. Fingers sliding along the sleek cool strands of that dark hair. Reassuring touches, but whether they were meant to calm Haku or himself was both unknown and unimportant.

This was it, the feeling of being whole that he’d been lacking. What he’d been driven to find all these days. It wasn’t some greater purpose It was a person who meant everything to him. A person who he’d refused death to be with.

A second hand lifted, wrapping around his body and holding him closer still. Protective and possessive Afraid he might simply slip away and he’d awake in some cruel dream. There were so many things to say.

How much he missed him.

What had happened.

Why was he here.

But only one thing fell from his lips.

“You need to rest, Haku.”

The arms that wrapped around him were almost too tight. At the moment, however, Haku couldn’t have cared. His feeble heart was pounding its sporadic pounding in his throat and the smaller male was holding onto his elder as tightly as he could— as if he would disappear before him if his grasp loosened any. Zabuza’s words came, though, and his clutch was slackened enough to turn a pale face up to stare at the other as if he had stricken him. Dark eyes searched the familiar optics of the the larger for any room to argue.

”No.” it was a plea; soft and gentle and almost weak. For over a year now he had been told by so many others to rest. Countless mouths had uttered the words, urging him to lessen himself for the sake of his life, but to hear it from Zabuza was painful.

——It was an acknowledgment of his worthlessness——

Suddenly, violently, the younger threw himself back from the other. His head spun in the action, but he cared not. his heart was pounding. His heart monitor was screaming.

”I’m not worthless!” he shouted as if the other had accused him of being so. It was the first time Haku had raised his voice to the elder. “I’ve rested far too long! I can’t do it any longer. I’ve waited and searched and trained this fickle body and-” there was a tang of blood in his mouth from over-exertion and his head fell down as his hands balled into fists.

What he wanted to say would not come. Words refused to form on his tongue and so he stood before the other, trembling. With hands as stern as hollow glass and a cheek full of blood he couldn’t show, he disdained how weak he felt… How brittle he seemed before his master.
